Be interested and interesting

We have previously discussed showing genuine interest, and you may have heard the saying ‘Be interested, not interesting’ in the context of networking. Dale Carnegie said it slightly differently: ‘To be interesting, be interested.’ Whilst I agree with this more, I am still not 100% onboard. Why not be interested and interesting at the same time?

People often talk about elevator pitches, which I have to say I dislike when they sound over-rehearsed and try to be too clever. Of course, we need to be able to articulate succinctly who we are and what we do, I am just encouraging you to make it intriguing. People asking you questions back is a good indicator that they are equally interested. Instead of delivering an elevator pitch, which robotically states who you are and what you do, why not share an example of a problem you have solved for your client/boss/colleague (insert noun of your choice)? This is even more effective if the example you give can be related to your conversation so far.
